Attendance

Attendance Overview

  1. To excuse an absence or tardy, you must call the Attendance Line within 48 hours. Handwritten or typed parent notes are not accepted.

  2. You may call in the morning to request a note for your student for any time of day.

  3. If a student arrives late, they must have their FHS ID ready to scan—either the physical ID card or the StudentVUE app.

  4. If a student arrives more than halfway through a class period, they are considered absent for that class period.

  5. Students who accumulate 10 unexcused tardies must serve 1 hour of after-school detention.

  6. Students with 10 consecutive days of unverified absences will be automatically withdrawn from FHS per Arizona law.

  7. If your student has a Chronic Illness form on file, please state “chronic illness” when calling to excuse an illness-related absence.

  8. Please check your student’s attendance every day or two on ParentVUE by clicking the Attendance tab.
For help with ParentVUE, contact Suzie Mendez at (928) 773-8112.

  9. Please call us with any questions or concerns regarding your student’s attendance.

    • Leave a Message:
When leaving messages on the Attendance line, please include:
      1. Your student’s name
      2. Your name
      3. Absence or tardy date(s)
      4. A brief reason for the absence or tardy (e.g., sick, vacation, medical appointment, family emergency, bereavement, religious holiday, or chronic illness—if you have a form on file)
  • If excusing a student for a medical appointment, a doctor’s note must be brought in within 48 hours to have the absence marked as a Medical Appointment (MA). Otherwise, a different absence code will be used.

  • When calling to have your student leave campus:

    • Call at least 30 minutes in advance (preferably more)
    • Provide: student’s name, your name and phone number, reason for leaving, and time of sign-out
    • You do not need to come into the building to sign your student out. We can verify you over the phone, and your student can sign themselves out.

If the student returns, they must sign back in.

  • If a student is leaving at lunch for any reason other than getting lunch, you must call first so the absence can be excused in advance.

  • Students may only be excused or released by a legal Parent/Guardian or Emergency Contact listed in the student’s file.

  • On Fridays or days before a holiday break, we may not be able to fulfill requests for your child to leave within 30 minutes of release time. Please call earlier in the day.

You have 48 hours from the date of the absence or tardy to excuse it. After 48 hours, we cannot change attendance marks unless accompanied by a doctor’s note.

Attendance Policy: Arizona Law states students must be in class 90% of the time in order to receive credit. There are 90 days in a semester so 10+ absences may result in a loss of credit.

Students may be excused by their parent/guardian in the following cases: illness, doctor appointment, mental or behavioral health, homelessness, bereavement, family emergencies, family vacation (up to three (3) days per school year  — absences for family vacation after 3 days will be marked Unexcused), time necessary to process for the armed forces, and out-of-school suspensions. In some instances, school administration may require documentation.
